Awesome Soundwave is coming to Ireland with a brand new Live event series! Bringing together carefully curated line-ups of local heroes and ASW artists in venues suited to intimate, immersive underground live techno experiences.
ASW Live makes its Belfast debut with none other than Phil Kieran at the Ulster Sports Club on August 29th. One of dance music’s most consistently inventive voices, Phil Kieran’s output spans three decades and multiple guises such as Le Carousel, Alloy Mental as well as DJing and composing for film.
This will be a rare chance to hear the producer reconstruct and mix his seminal tracks and hidden gems into over an hour of techno-driven alchemy. Heard side by side his repertoire charts Phil Kieran’s evolution as an electronic artist and highlights just how era-defining his productions have been.
Built around live synthesis and real-time manipulation of on-stage hardware like the Roland TR-909 and TR-08 the pioneering producer has so far hinted at performing reimagined versions of Skyhook (Novamute 2007), Wasps Under a Toy Boat ( Cocoon , 2008) Polyrhythmic (Optimo 2018).
Speaking about the collaboration Kieran says ‘I’ve always resisted retrospectives as I prefer to move forwards but there was something about Awesome Soundwave’s single minded commitment to live techno that I think is needed right now. In an age of AI and DJs stuck in autopilot I think people are craving something real, something more immediate , improvised and unpredictable. Techno is quite precise, a little bit of human imperfection brings it alive.’
He adds, “I say no to lots of DJ promoters who want me to play old music to large anonymous crowds; the mere mention of ‘classics’ gives me the heebie-jeebies. Working with ASW has given me the space to look back over my life’s work , from afar, revisiting and reworking it as a new project in its own right.”
Irish modular live techno stalwart Christopher Coe who co-founded ASW with legendary DJ Carl Cox, will also perform on the night alongside Belfast’s own Sturge completing an all-Irish line-up of cutting edge techno.
Awesome Soundwave is a 100% live artist label, focused on boundary pushing live electronic music artists. Live and improvised performances, not DJ sets.
Coe affirms, “I’ve been a fan of Phil’s productions over the years and remember the excitement of seeing him live in the early 2000s. In Australia, where I now live, his music is having a renaissance but I knew he’d been concentrating on composing for film and his more Indie-dance Le Carousel album so I wasn’t sure if he relished a return to techno, never mind playing it completely live. Luckily he’s completely passionate about it and plans are afoot to announce a further tour of the ASW Live /Phil Kieran show soon.
The Belfast show marks the beginning of a series of ASW Live events. We have some other exciting artists earmarked to perform live experiences in their homeplaces across Ireland and the UK soon.
